Day 7: From Snowcapped to Red Rock

Cute Rabbit Ears Motel in the town of Steamboat Springs.

 "The beach".

Alyssa and Raul on the gondola up the mountain....

Smiles all around-- thanks, Alyssa, for a great time!

Crazy people dirt biking down the mountain. Alyssa, who works as a physical therapist, had all kinds of stories to tell about patients doing daring acts on their bikes or on the slopes, just waiting for another chance ski again, AKA get"their powder days".

Kids' camp up on the mountain.

An Olympic town.

Gorgeous views from Thunderhead building.

 Mountain flowers.

 Traveling dogs...

OK, I've seen many more squished bugs than I bargained for, but this one is especially stunning.

The landscape begins to change again...

Still looking for buffalo, and taking tons of pictures of cows (just in case).

Stopping to fill up our bottles with fresh spring water.

Made it to Utah.

Despite the sign, Jo Mama's was closed.

Gary, at Papa Joe's gas station, told us about a good place to camp... Only after telling us about how jealous Italian women can be (and that, although he's seen a lot of pretty Italian ladies, he'd never date one again!)

Union Pacific.

Would you look at those red rocks?

Not a bad place to camp, near Moab, on the edge of the Colorado River.

Stars, stars, stars...

Day 6: The Most Beautiful Drive (Colorado)

Boulder has been voted healthiest (fittest, thinnest, etc.) city many years in a row, so it seemed fitting to run into a marathon.

Reflections in Boulder...

The famous Flatirons.

Photographs cannot describe the intensity of driving through these mountains. In a word: overwhelming.

...what is this?

I photographed as many of these signs as possible; really, can't get enough.

Gotta love the old-fashioned gas pumps. The gas attendant asked us how much it cost to fill the tank, which seemed surprisingly trusting to me (I couldn't imagine this happening in the NY area).

Lots of rafting.

Now THIS looks like the West...

Natural springs.

Nature calls.

On top of the world!

These winding roads on Loveland Pass were so steep, with no guard rail-- okay, now I understand why they call it the WILD West.

11,900 ft!

...and not out of breath (yet).

Snowboarding in June.

Windy!

Cute flora.

Striking a pose...

I mean, would you look at this?? Just stunning.

Unfortunately we didn't see any elk or bears on this day, but we DID catch a glimpse of a buffalo. Raul is still kicking himself for not having stopped (we thought we'd see more, but they are endangered).

 Ah, the American road...

We've entered the evergreen phase of the landscape...

Dinner in Steamboat Springs at Alyssa and Todd's place-- delish!

They're kind of making the same face...

 Alyssa and Jezebel!

Taking a stroll through the downtown of Steamboat Springs.

 Rodeo cows.

 More vintage signs...

Flirting (with the bear as chaperone).
