Day 4: Lyla's Nebraska Farm Life

Most of day four's photos will be of this incredibly adorable child, Lyla. Her dad, Janie, knows Raul from Cuba and he and his wife, Nikki, graciously invited us to their rural Nebraska home.

This is Tito, the female peacock, who acts more like a dog.

"She likes the stripes!"

This hen is taking care of three baby peacocks (two are sitting underneath her, haha!)

These lovely flowers are considered to be weeds.
On the property sits an abandoned barn from 1917.

Inside the barn... It's in functioning condition but the owners, two school teachers in Lincoln, don't use it anymore.

The old milking room. Metal rods used to hold the cows' heads in place.

A nice walk behind the cornfields to the lakes and pasture.

Raul can do a surprisingly accurate cow impression-- they slowly came closer and closer, mooing territorially in response.

This is the old farm house on the property, unfortunately also abandoned...

Cans of nuts and powdered milk were some of the few items still intact throughout the house.

See the bird's nest on the right? Electricity still worked in the house (we didn't try this light though!)

Wexi was so excited to explore.

Nikki isn't crazy about the geese and I don't blame her, they are aggressive honkers and will chase you!

Cuddling with sweet Wexi.

Look at that face!

On our way to grandma and grandpa's...

Toad!

I loved seeing all the farm animals... guinea, chicken, cats....

Nikki's happy to be with  beautiful horses.

Apparently there's a pecking order!

Nikki cleaning out Bud's hoof. I learned that the triangular cartilage is called a frog.

In her element!

A neighbor of Nikki's stopped her on the road and when we told her we were moving to San Francisco she said, "Are you sure?" multiple times, haha! She told us how she could never live outside of the country, and quoted Hank Williams in saying, "Country folk can survive".

I can't get over the cuteness.

Janie gave Raul a matching (Cuba) hat!
