Day 1: Truck Art and Pittsburgh

Across from home is Colts Neck, a surprisingly rural town known for its horses and McMansions. Though I pass these stables daily, I hardly ever see the jockeys riding-- this is our farewell treat.

Passing through Freehold, NJ, a historic town known for the Battle of Monmouth. Also has a great Cuban restaurant, A Little Taste of Cuba Dos.

Believe it or not, we're still in New Jersey.

Crossing into Pennsylvania, but disappointed to see no Welcome to Pennsylvania sign!

I can't get enough of these truck graphics...

Looks like progress, but it's only a little dent in what's left to go.

What's a road trip without the quintessential foot and truck selfies?

The mountains of Pennsylvania were lush and beautiful, plus it was fun to drive through them!

A much-needed rain storm to break the humid heat...

Great big clouds and wind turbines.

Lumber and stone work through rural Pennsylvania.

You don't have to go too far South or West to see evangelical messages like these.

We made it to Pittsburgh! And the car's intact. Now we say a little prayer each time we park it somewhere (the top storage is just clothes, but I'm hoping to get to San Francisco with my wardrobe).

What a gorgeous public library. Between Carnegie Mellon and UPitt, there's a lot of student activity and cultural events going on in town.

Our first "honeymoon" photo with Pittsburgh's dinosaur.

The Cathedral of Learning and some sprawling lawns for college kids.

Our wonderful caterer, Linda Walton, told us that her niece opened a eatery called "Conflict Kitchen" in Pittsburgh. Every so often, the cuisine and facade change to represent a country with which the United States is in conflict. They've represented places like North Korea and Cuba, we experienced the Afghani version.

Not only was the food good (we ordered kabuli palow, bolani kachaloo and salata), but we also picked up some very informational reading material about Afghanistan and its culture.

 Really quirky architecture through town...

Coffee break! Now let's keep strolling...

 Masonic influences, perhaps?

 Chinese & Cuban-- how bizarre!

Here comes another storm! We couldn't believe the level of heat and humidity, I'd always associated Pittsburgh with cold.

 Downtown seen from the bridge.

Ha! We stayed at Not Another Hostel with Jon, who has had visitors from all over the country and world stay (for free!) at his home. It's this kind of generosity and trusting energy that you can only find when traveling.
